What is it about?

The Australian mining industry has emerged and developed as a result of government policies and subsidies, and foreign investment. The availability and the volumes of mining resources have always been complemented by these two factors, which have also been highly relevant for the development of the Australian gas exports.

Why is it important?

Australian gas exports to Asia will increasingly play a major role in the decrease in the use of coal. The development of the gas industry will rely on the same factors that have created the present mining industry.

Perspectives

The paper presents the individual elements that have contributed to the development of the mining industry in Australia since the late 19th century, and the significance of these elements in the creation of export markets in Asia, and China in particular, during the 2000s-2010s' commodity super cycle.
