What is it about?
In this study I attempt to explain the occurrence of verb-third constructions (which violate the verb-second rule of German) in Kiezdeutsch (an urban youth dialect) by appealing to the phonological properties of the V3-construction. My claim is that Kiezdeutsch restricts the amount of phonetic weight left of the verb so that in effect the amount of weight is roughly equivalent to what is acceptable in a normal verb-second construction. This strategy requires the syntax-phonology interface.

Why is it important?
This study is important for several reasons: i) to support the general claim made must convincing by Wiese's (2012) book that Kiezdeutsch is a genuine German dialect, ii) to provide further evidence that the V2-rule has a phonological component, and iii) to provide a new basis for explaining V2-violations in general.
Perspectives
This publication in a very general sense supports the claim of other minimalist work that head-movement phenomena are handled at least partially, if not completely, by the phonological component of the grammar, and furthermore that a generative grammar needs to be designed so that the requirements of the phonological and semantic interfaces are satisfied.
