What is it about?

Two important outcomes are reported. First, linear elastic strains are small and their gradients are even smaller. The experimental portion of this paper describes the challenges of trying to achieve accuracy and resolution. Second, evaluation of different methods of identifying heterogeneous stiffness was accomplished by use of an equilibrium window. This evaluation provided a measure of confidence in the heterogeneous stiffness identificaiton.

Why is it important?

Most materials are heterogeneous as some scale of measurement. Paperboard was used in this work because we think its heterogeneous behavior is created by the manufacturing process. Use of the procedure described in this paper can provide guidance in quality control processes and improve paperboard behavior.

Perspectives

Heterogeneous behavior of paperboard has been observed for many decades. Until recently the measurment and evaluation methods hadn't been developed for actionable characterization of heterogeneity.
