What is it about?

The article provides a brief summary of the development of assimilation models and explanations of social integration. Critically it argues that contemporary descriptions of assimilation are constrained by established explications that are limited to the assimilation experiences of white ethnic groups during the early 20th century. Taking into consideration the demographic shifts that have occurred and the resistance non-white native-born groups have experienced as they attempt to achieve equitable assimilation it is time for new descriptions of cultural assimilation, structural integration, and minority social inclusion beyond accommodation. The paper provides some suggestions for new approaches to investigating 21st century processes of assimilation and integration.
