What is it about?

Flexibility influences how we move. Athletes with large hamstring flexibility experience less resistance when the knee is extended, they are stronger at knee flexion at more extended joint angles, and they are able to produce large force over a larger range of motion compared to athletes with normal flexibility, although their maximal strength is not different.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that flexibility is not only a result of pain threshold, but also influences how easily the joint is extended, and how the muscle system crossing the joint functions during muscular contractions.

Perspectives

This article is a small step towards understanding how stretching training changes the function of the joints being stretched, not only affecting pain tolerance but also producing changes locally in the muscle tendon systems.
