What is it about?

When starting a new complex intervention programme in public health it is necessary to adapt first conceptual ideas to the needs of the context. In this article we demonstrate the process of developing the conceptual building blocks of the Caregivers´ Guide, a programme aiming to reduce stroke caregiver burden and maintain quality of life.

Why is it important?

We actively involved the programmes´ end-users (experienced family caregivers) and multiprofessional stakeholders (service providers), working in the stroke rehabilitation trajectory (acute, rehabilitation and home care), in the development of the concept.

Perspectives

A complex interventions development in the field of public health should include the involvement or even engagement of the programmes stakeholders (end-users and service providers) to fit the intervention to the individual and system needs. It was interesting to see that the factor “who is providing the counselling?” was very important for the stakeholders (social skills, professional knowledge, and personality traits).
