What is it about?

Empowerment is a widely used concept, often referred to as the opposite of paternalism or possibility of self-determination. By analyzing all explicit and implicit definitions linked to a particular environment (critical care), a more holistic view of the concept became visible. This concept consisted of five cornerstones or defining attributes; a supportive relationship, knowledge, skills, power within oneself, and self-determination. These were applicable to all groups whether patients, staff or family members, even if the more specific content of each attribute varies between groups and individuals.
