Why is it important?

Having knowledge about how narratives are bulit up, health care professionals can help people making sense of their experiences achieved through questions aiming to expounding their narratives. The knowledge can also be utilized by researchers to understand narratives not only by what is said but also by the way things are said. Analysis of the narrative structure can contribute with valuable information that might be missed with other narrative analysis such as narrative thematic analysis as it puts light on other aspects of the narratives. Narratives ordering, temporal, iterative or even circular, rhythm in speech and poetics in language are some examples. Narrative structure analysis can also be used as a tool for revealing patterns within and across narratives. It can be used to grasp recurrent or missing elements or units, complicating actions and what resolve them or the turning points of the narrated event.

Perspectives

Attending to the narrative structure is a way of analysing narratives which can be used on its own or in combination with other narrative analysis, allowing to focus on things that might be missed when only analysing what is said and not how things are said.
