What is regulation? An interdisciplinary concept analysis

What is it about?

This paper questions whether there is a unified understanding of 'regulation' across the different social science disciplines. We explore certain dimensions that have been identified as critical, conduct an innovative analysis based on the most often cited articles on regulation, and find that there are certain common features that go across disciplinary boundaries.

Why is it important?

As regulation as a field of study is said to have matured, there is been only little attention to the question of definition. Without a definition, however, the field has problems in terms of identifying what it actually is and isn't. This paper moves, by looking systematically across disciplines in the social sciences, beyond the existing typologies and discussions that reflect thinking of the turn of the century.
