What is it about?

Bureaucratic failings and institutional barriers hamper the care provided for deprived elderly. In order to address the impasse, an institutional response integrating a stakeholder perspective is recommended in policy design and implementation.

Why is it important?

Governance problems underpin the way services are delivered in sub Saharan Africa. Policies are not properly coordinated and government services in charge of social security and pensions are not well streamlined. Older people struggle to fill these gaps within social networks, often insufficient.

Perspectives

Older people concerns is not given serious consideration by most African governments. There is need to revisit provision of services for the elderly given the demographic bulge that harbour wider implications on social development.
