What is it about?

In this paper we have confirmed the existence of a mixed bird–insect pollination system in Scrophularia trifoliata, a Tyrrhenian endemic. This system is found in three other Scrophularia species with large, showy floral morphotypes – two Mediterranean (S. grandiflora and S. sambucifolia) and one Macaronesian (S. calliantha).

Why is it important?

In European ecosystems, dominant pollination is carried out by insects, whereas that carried out by birds is very rare.

Perspectives

It is a very nice and interesting species. That species shares characters with other Mediterranean species of Scrophularia, but it is unique in some aspects, the most important of which is to present two large spots inside its large corollas; this character had not been documented before in the taxonomic descriptions.
