What is it about?

This report highlights the role of non-symbiotic haemoglobin proteins also known as phytoglobin in plants in regulating the abiotic stress and mineral nutrient such as potassium responses by mostly working through modulating the levels of reactive oxygen species. This study uses the phytoglobin proteins from rice and their functional role have been assessed in Arabidopsis plants.

Why is it important?

This report describe the usage of genetic and molecular biology techniques to decipher the function of important class of protein known as phytoglobin in abiotic stresses and mineral nutrient deficiency, which are important parameters responses;le for loss of crop-productivity world-wide. By detail understanding of these proteins regulating important physiological processes, plant biologist can develop the technology to generate plants which can tolerate higher degree of stress and also soil deficient in mineral nutrient without heavy application of fertilisers like NPK and enhance the crop productivity.

This publication open gateway for the role of phytoglobin in regulating the stress and plant nutrient responses in plants. The detail in-depth understanding of the process of regulation of stress tolerance and mineral nutrient condition in plants will provide important platform to plant biologist to apply the knowledge in developing future crops tolerant to stress as well as mineral nutrient deficient soil without affecting yield and productivity.
