What is it about?

As a starch-accumulating organ, potato tuber does not normally accumulate oil. We have generated transgenic potato tubers accumulating oil up to 100-fold compared to the wild type plants. This may generate a high biomass platform for biofuel production as well as nutrition improvement and value-adding.

Why is it important?

Our findings demonstrated the feasibility of increasing oil accumulation in potato tuber. Because of its high biomass nature, potato tuber might be considered as a novel platform for biofuel production and high value vegetable oil through further genetic modification.

Perspectives

Further research could be directed to understand the carbon reallocation for further increase of oil accumulation without negative impact on tuber yield.
