What is it about?

Periodontal regenerative therapy using bone-substituting materials has gained favorable clinical significance in enhancing osseous regeneration. We developed an injectable melatonin-loaded nano-sized β-TCP/hydrogel scaffold accelerates and promotes periodontal regeneration in class II furcation defects.

Why is it important?

Our results indicate that the melatonin-treated group showed accelerated bone formation and advanced maturity, with a significant two-fold increase in newly formed inter-radicular bone compared to the unloaded composite. The short-term regenerative efficacy was evident four weeks postoperatively as a significant increase in cementum length concurrent with reduction of entrapped epithelium. After eight weeks, the scaffold produced a quality of newly synthesized bone similar to normal compact bone, with potent periodontal ligament attachment.

Perspectives

This work was a multidisciplinary collaborative effort with a team formed from a variety of disciplines and multiple centers, it was an immense pleasure and honor to collaborate with them all. Each and everyone added a significant plus to this work to appear as it is today. I wish this work attempts to bridge the gap between the ideal bone graft requirements and what we actually currently have.
