What is it about?

Why is it important?

It is essential for businesses who trade in biofortified (nutrient enriched) commodities to be aware of the standards, rules, regulations or laws so they comply to the rules when selling and know what to expect when buying. Following the rules along the way ensures that the consumer (on the farm, in the home or on the market) is buying a product that is going to make an impact on their health and the wider population.

Perspectives

There is a lack of understanding that specific rules/laws/standards exist for seeds, grains and foods and they are different in each country. In order to scale nutrient enriched crops, it is necessary to highlight these different rules to the value chain actors involved. This creates a level, commercial playing field and will protect the consumer. In doing this work, all of the value chain actors involved are contributing towards a more nutritious staple food system.
