What is it about?
Iron (Fe) is a fundamental element for virtually all cellular organisms. Most angiosperms, such as Arabidopsis, have evolved Fe absorption through the so-called Strategy I, which involves IRT-mediated Fe uptake in the soluble form Fe2+. Our work indicates that Fe2+ uptake mediated by IRT/ZIP transporters evolved at least twice independently during green plant evolution from deeply divergent ancestral ZIP genes.
