What is it about?
Carbon (C) concentrations are an important chemical characteristic of wood, but our understanding of why tree species express different wood C concentrations is lacking. We find that environmental variables including temperature, precipitation, and seasonality determine wood C concentrations in trees. We also find evidence that increasing temperatures, as are expected under climate change, are likely to decrease wood C concentrations in the future.
