Chromosome number is key to longevity of polyploid lineages

What is it about?

Most plants have fewer chromosomes than expected based on past polyploidy events. Following polyploidy, gene loss of redundant genes (diploidization), creates circumstances where chromosome fusions and fewer chromosomes are favored.
