What is it about?
Plants use reactive oxygen species in their defense against fungi colonizing their roots. Here we provide evidence that root endophytic fungi also face such defensive responses during the establishment of beneficial interactions and have to use effector-proteins to counteract plant immunity. We show that the plant-responsive protein Dld1 tightly binds transition metal ions and has the potential to help Serendipita indica to cope with oxidative stress generated by the plant at the host cell wall.
