What is it about?
Semi-arid ecosystems are common around the world, important to humans and are changing rapidly due to wildfire, forest decline, shrub encroachment and climate change. We highlight research advances from five different research areas that are improving our ability to forecast large-scale changes in semi-arid ecosystems and suggest that a new modelling approach that can incorporate data from many different conceptual backgrounds will quickly improve forecasts of these semi-arid biome shifts.
