What is it about?

The fungal pathogen Ustilago maydis secretes the metalloprotease Fly1, which has a dual function. It activates the endogenous chitinase Cts1 to facilitate cell-separation during the yeast-like growth phase of U. maydis. In addition, Fly1 is required for plant infection, because it targets the defense-induced maize chitinase ZmChiA.
