Strigolactones function as host recognition signals for root parasitic plants and symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and as plant hormones regulating shoot branching. We provide new insight into the roles of MAX1, a cytochrome P450 enzyme, in endogenous and rhizosphere signaling.
