What is it about?

We measured symptoms and severity of constipation, amount of H2 /CH4 production and colonic transit time by a stool daily registration, a lactulose breath test (LBT) and a colonic transit study pre and post-treatment . Patients received a 4 week treatment with 10.5 grs. Ispaghula husk per day.

Why is it important?

previous studies demonstrated an association between methane and constipation, however, there is a limited data available in Spanish constipated population. Even though our control group, which is not different in terms of M+/M-, our study shows an association of constipation and the amount of production. Our analysis, based on clinical manifestations, lactulose breath test and colonic transit time, confirmed these findings in a wider Spanish population. Is the only study regarding the association between methane production and constipation that has been performed using lactulose breath test.
