What is it about?

Access to urgent mental health services is crucial to a better outcome for people in distress. This study found that rather than provide ease of access and what people want at the time of crisis, mental health services go about keeping people out in order to reduce the burden on scarce resources.

Why is it important?

Increased suicide rates and long term impact of mental illness on individuals and their families is a key health target for our community. Getting early access that is acceptable to people in distress as well as those community and social agencies that rely on consulation and help is essential for better health outcomes and socially just.

Perspectives

This research challenges longstanding clinical and policy perspectives about what is important to those who use mental health services as well as their families. By engaging with service users, families, mental health nurses and the police - multiple new perspectives were surfaced in regard to how people face uncertainty and make change in the context of mental ill-health.
