What is it about?

The Qur'an makes scant mention of cities or countries. Gibson searches the historical record for references to the five places most often mentioned in the Qur'an, the People of 'Ad, Midian, Thamud, Medina, and Mecca.

Why is it important?

The People of 'Ad, Midian, and Thamud lived near Petra in northern Arabia, not near Mecca in western Arabia.

Perspectives

The fact that the historical evidence suggests that Petra, not Mecca, was the initial Holy City of Islam deserves consideration and a reasoned response.
