What is it about?
BldD sits at the top of regulatory cascade controlling morphological development of Streptomyces. It generally functions as a repressor of genes involved in aerial hyphae formation and sporulation. We revealed for the first time that BldD activates antibiotic biosynthesis in Streptomyces both directly and via a cascade mechanism. Our findings provide novel insights into the cellular roles of BldD, and help to clarify the complex regulatory mechanisms of antibiotic production and rationally construct antibiotic overproducers.
