What is it about?

The bacterium Myxococcus xanthus undergoes multicellular development when starved. Commitment to spore formation involves C-signal-dependent activation of the transcription factor FruA, but the mechanism is poorly understood. Our systematic experimental and computational analyses support a model in which C-signaling activates FruA at least ninefold posttranslationally by a mechanism other than phosphorylation.
