Why is it important?

The cell wall plays a major role in how our immune system perceives the invading fungal pathogen. Different body sites have specific environmental cues, which the fungus must adapt to. Therefore, adaptation to these environments will affect the cell wall structure and result in an altered immune response. This review highlights our current understanding of how the environment affects the cell wall structure and the implications this has on innate immune recognition.

Perspectives

The impact environmental adaptation has on the fungal cell wall and the consequences these modifications have on innate immune recognition is an expanding and important field in mycology. This review highlights our current understanding of the field.
