What is it about?
We have isolated active metabolites from soil samples obtained from rare habitats of Himalayas. The chemical structure of the metabolites was deduced using several spectroscopic techniques. These metabolites exhibited promising activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv Strain.

Why is it important?
There is a dearth of new drugs needed for the treatment of tuberculosis because existing drugs although effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis but these drugs are associated with serious side effects which often lead to patient nonadherence to the treatment. The treatment then becomes suboptimal and consequence of this the emergence of drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis.
Perspectives
This discovery of these metabolites has opened up a new frontier in the Tuberculosis drug development paradigsm.
