What is it about?

Detection of multi-drug resistance TB from sputum samples is difficult and time consuming. An improved PCR technique (MAS-PCR) developed in our study will make diagnosis of MDR-TB rapid, efficient and cost effective.

Why is it important?

The moment we felt that tuberculosis is no longer a problem for us, TB fought back in the form of MDR-TB. Although by using second line drugs we can treat MDR-TB, our ignorance may result in the rise and spread of extremely drug resistant TB (XDR-TB). That is why early detection and treatment of MDR-TB is very important. In this study, we attempted to improve a cost effective technique (MAS-PCR) so that detection of MDR-TB is possible directly from sputum samples.
