What is it about?

The tibio-tarsal joint is a difficult joint to explore arthroscopically, due to its tightness and anatomical conformation. Joint distraction can help in visualizing the joint structures by increasing the room inside the joint, and reducing the risk of iatrogenic damages to the cartilage.

Why is it important?

The procedure can make the arthroscopic exploration of the tibio-tarsal joint safer for the patient and easier for the surgeon.

Perspectives

Arthroscopic techniques are rapidly expanding in veterinary orthopedics, dramatically reducing invasiveness for the patient. The techniques bear inherent risks of iatrogenic damages, though, due to the maneuvers requested by the procedure. The availability of larger spaces inside the joint will increase the potential procedure that can be performed arthroscopically, reducing the complications due to open joint approaches.
