What is it about?

Sexually inappropriate behaviour among individuals with intellectual disabilities is distinct from that of the same in the general population. Research in effective specialized risk assessment and intervention planning for this client group is a relatively new area of focus. The article presents a literature review on this subject and recommends improvements for applied practice.

Why is it important?

Sexual offending behaviour among persons with intellectual disabilities is prevalent. It is important that current practices in risk assessment and mitigation planning for these individuals be made more robust.

Perspectives

Established person-centered and strength based principles used in care planning for persons with intellectual disabilities should be incorporated as standards in risk assessment for those who sexually offend. Recognizing the diversity of factors for each individual and collaborating with the circle of support will enhance outcomes.
