What is it about?

Effect of catechin-rich green tea containing cyclodextrins (CDs) on P-gp function was evaluated. Catechines in green tea suppressed P-gp-mediated transports of rhodamine123 and quinidine. CDs in green tea increased the solubility of digoxin and intestinal absorption of digoxin significantly.

Why is it important?

CDs are widely used in various food stuffs including green tea beverages as solubilizers. Our findings demonstrated the interaction of CD-containing green tea with hydrophilic and lipophilic P-gp substrate drugs. Especially, CDs can increase the solubility of various lipophilic compounds more or less in vitro and in vivo. The ingestion of CDs should be avoided in taking poorly water soluble P-gp and non-P-gp substrate drugs.
