Culture and food are inextricably linked, and these relationships impact how a cultural group will view and manage disease. The study describes the sociocultural experience of Mexican American women with diabetes, particularly in relation to food habits.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that culture and traditional food ways remain important parts of Mexican American women, regardless of being diagnosed with diabetes. Developing expertise in the management of diabetes requires time, and that expertise is developed within the sociocultural context.
