What is it about?

Little is known about the impact of the increasing number of older people with dementia on the treatment of patients in surgical wards. The results are applicable for efforts to improve the abilities of nursing staff, physicians, and close relatives in the treatment of older people with dementia in acute care settings.

Why is it important?

The role of the close relative of a person with dementia significantly impacts the patient’s well-being in acute care. When treating older people with dementia, health care professionals should take patients’ holistic care, mental, physical and social needs into account

Perspectives

The results confirm that the knowledge or resources available in acute care settings when caring for older people with dementia are insufficient to meet the criteria of good treatment practice
