What is it about?
This literature review is about patients and their visitors (consumers) involvement in early detection of physical deterioration in patients and taking their concerns to health professionals so they can render rapid assistance.

Why is it important?
We have not previously seen a literature review on this aspect of care. Jane and I considered it important to identify and appraise evaluative studies of consumer participation in systems dedicated to early detection of patient deterioration and rapid medical intervention.
Perspectives
This review provides some important answers to our questions - yes there is evidence of positive outcomes for patients when consumers are educated and encouraged to detect deterioration and report it. Readily accessible, easy to understand information available in a range of multimedia materials and accompanied by explanations and support of health professionals are important to the success of consumer involvement.
