Why is it important?

Serial block face scanning electron microscopy is a new 3D imaging technique which provides an in depth insight of a tissue cellular structures. This technique enabled us to visualize the protrusion of fetal blood cells through the syncytiotrophoblast.

Perspectives

This publication is important not only due to the novel observation of an erythrocyte protruding through syncytiotrophoblast but also due to the fact that it can suggest potential routes of cells transporting through the syncytiotrophoblast layer.
