What is it about?

Active management of the third stage of labor is recommended internationally to decrease risk of excessive blood loss during the stage right after babies are born and when the placenta, or afterbirth, is expelled. In this study, US physicians and midwives report how they manage the third stage of labor including what components of active management they regularly use.

Why is it important?

Excessive blood loss is one of the leading causes of complications and death for women giving birth. Active management is considered a method of preventing excessive blood loss. Understanding what midwives and other healthcare providers do or how they management the third stage is the first step to then tying their management to outcomes like blood loss.

Perspectives

Understanding what techniques US midwives and physicians use during the third stage of labor and how these techniques influence blood loss women giving birth experience is necessary to improved the health of women.
