Why is it important?

Over a third of all women in the United States now have their babies surgically. Women experiencing a cesarean birth desire to be more involved with their births, have their babies stay with them if medically appropriate, and start breastfeeding in the operating room if possible. Finding suggest improved outcomes for mothers and babies without any negative outcomes. One challenge to implementation is the need for a second nurse to attend to the baby while another nurse is attending to the mother. Hospital staffing models often to not allow for this staffing despite recommendations from national organizations and positive patient outcomes.
