Life cycle engineering (LCE) extends efforts at environmental improvement of manufacturing processes to include upstream processes (raw materials extraction & processing) and downstream processes (product use by consumers and recycling or disposal).

Perspectives

Life cycle engineering represents an attempt by engineers who focus on manufacturing (e.g., mechanical and industrial engineers) and are concerned about environmental impacts to broaden their focus. It parallels the development of life cycle assessment (LCA) in other parts of the world of environmental management and research, but focuses on design of products and production processes rather than environmental assessment.
