What is it about?

We argue that existing theories that seek to explain the "who does what at home" do not work very well for contemporary families. We propose new ways to think about power relationships and resources between partners to better understand how housework is divided.

Why is it important?

Housework is a part of reality for most adults. In couples and families, housework can reflect power relationships between couples, so understanding the division of labor is important. We propose that researchers find theories that reflect diverse families and take into account that when it comes to work and employment, other factors besides pay can matter, such as job security, benefits, or schedule flexibility. ​
