What is it about?

We wanted to explore a technique to measure the relative abundance of large volumes of ichthyoplankton collected from trawls of open water as an alternative to physically identifying and counting all fish the sample. This technique allows a rapid semi-quantitative method of determining species presence in bulk ichthyoplankton samples improving cost efficiency of long-term studies of plankton dynamics.
