Genes associated with gum disease in Africa

What is it about?

Studies of people in Europe which compared the genes of those with a very severe form of gum disease with the rest of the population identified one gene (GLT6D1) which was more like to be associated with disease . We found that this gene was also also associated with very severe gum disease in affected individuals in Sudan.

Why is it important?

This was one of the first studies in which a candidate gene identified by scan of the whole genome to be associated with severe gum disease was confirmed by an independent study in another group of affected individuals.
