Why is it important?

Chronic periodontitis patients will most probably need repeated episodes of mechanical instrumentation during their life time and it has been shown that short periodontal treatment regimes have practical benefits. Nevertheless when patients are only seen once to receive initial treatment in a single visit, oral hygiene reinforcement and motivation may be compromised and this seems to have a negative impact on the treatment outcome.

Perspectives

Periodontitis patients and in particular the advanced cases are chronically diseased patients and regardless of whether active treatment is completed in a single visit on the same day or over several consecutive treatment sessions over several weeks the therapist should frequently review the patient for oral hygiene reinforcement and motivation.
