What is it about?

Remote prescribing has increasing exponentially in the last 5 years and is a practice which confers many advantages for quick and easy access to healthcare particularly for those in remote and rural settings. However, due to the urgency of embedding remote prescribing and the subsequent developments of how, and where, this practice can be implemented there has been limited discussion of the governance around remote prescribing. This scoping review discusses the contemporary literature and makes recommendations on how to optimise governance structures.

Why is it important?

Remote prescribing is a practice which will only increase with demand and advancing technology. However, this need cannot be at the expense of safe and effective prescribing practices. This review highlights the need for a governance framework around remote prescribing to safeguard the public and professionals involved.

Perspectives

This review is part of a wider research doctoral project to consider the international perspective of remote prescribing and governance structures.
