Why is it important?

Although professional regulatory bodies attempt to ensure clinical competence of nurses, unsafe practices have been reported. To identify research that reports how nurses recognise unsafe practice and how they respond. To identify gaps in research related to the recognition of unsafe nursing practice in order to determine future research priorities.

Perspectives

This article outlines the review of the literature that was undertaken as part of a PhD research project. It clearly demonstrates a gap in relevant literature related to nurses recognition and response to unsafe practice they witness in their peers.
