What is it about?

We functionally analyze the osterix/sp7 promoter in vivo in the bony fish medaka. Osterix/sp7 is a key regulator of osteoblast differentiation and activity. This function is conserved in medaka as shown in another publication.

Why is it important?

We identified a small region of the osterix/sp7 promoter which is important for the expression of osterix/sp7 in a tissue and time specific manner. This region is highly conserved also in the mammalian osterix/sp7 promoter suggesting a similar function in these species.

Perspectives

This publication contributes to the understanding that key regulator genes of osteoblast differentiation, maturation and activity are highly conserved in bony fish such as medaka. Furthermore, it clearly defines a short nucleotide sequence in the osterix/sp7 promoter which is indispensable for the correct expression of osterix/sp7 in osteoblasts.
