What is it about?
ZrB2-SiC is an ultra-high-temperature ceramic. When exposed to shock waves, as produced in hypersonic vehicles, we show the onset of oxidation at a much lower temperature. Moreover, the addition of Titanium to the ceramic composite improves the shock resistance

Why is it important?
Shock waves are inevitable, and their material response for the long-duration flight of hypersonic vehicles is important. We show the importance of shock tube testing in the preliminary screening of material for such applications.
Perspectives
We have adopted an integrated experimental-computational approach to address shock wave interaction with the material. This work will help in understanding the importance of developing materials with better oxidation and shock resistance properties.
