What is it about?

A facile sol–gel procedure has been developed for the synthesis of colloidal alumina nanocrystals. For the first time, optical characterization procedures were employed to study the quantum confinement effects in optical properties of the prepared Al2O3 sol.

Why is it important?

Our finding shows that the quantum confinement effect was observed in colloidal Al2O3 nanocrystals for the first time and a synthesis method causing the crystalline defect in colloidal Al2O3 nanocrystals and to provide transition from insulating to semiconducting behavior was not reported.

Perspectives

The development of new process to control the bandwidth of alumina colloidal nanocrystals emission spectrum associated with quantum confinement effects is inevitable.
