What is it about?

Timely diagnosis of subclinical mastitis enables early intervention which can minimize the production and economic losses. The California mastitis test (CMT) and somatic cell count (SCC) are commonly used for diagnosis of subclinical mastitis in cattle but both tests have shortcomings in terms of sensitivity and specificity. We used haptoglobin and amyloid A in milk, as more accurate biomarkers for the diagnosis of subclinical mastitis in Holstein cows.

Why is it important?

The results of the present study suggest that measuring haptoglobin and amyloid A in milk is more accurate than the conventional methods for the diagnosis of subclinical mastitis in Holstein cows.

Perspectives

The knowledge base on APP levels in dairy cows is more complete in order to allow full use of biomarkers of mastitis. We hope that the ultimate use of APP testing could be in automated milking systems where immunoassay based systems for APP quantification could be developed.
